California Dreamin'-Day 3

 Day 3-
Woke up to the smell of Madrona trees outside and it made me have a fit of nostalgia. That smell has my childhood written all over it!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Grabbed some yummy breakfast of fresh omelets & sausages at the hotel, and headed to Solvang for a walk about.

Cute little Danish town in the middle of “nowhere”. Reminded me very much of a mixture of Poulsbo and Leavenworth, so it would probably be more exciting for someone who doesn’t frequent those places as often as I do-even still, I was curious to explore there at least once in my life. So-ok then....Check!

Mom & I enjoyed a true Danish custard éclair, got a couple souvenirs of funny things for Holls & Bubba before leaving for Hearst Castle. Funny aren't they? Some trinkets are so fitting...

This place is off the coast of San Simeon, and LITERALLY in the freaking boondocks!  I am NOT a castle type person- but mom really wanted to check out an “American” castle (seeing that she has been to numerous European castles in her lifetime). This place came highly recommended as a must see-and was another park owned by the state of California. Once we reached the visitors center, we had to board a tour bus (which for those who know me –is NOT a joy for me-public transportation makes me queasy)…..not to mention the long & winding 5-mile road, which lead up a steep incline to the residence. I almost lost my cookies a few times

The outside of the property was absolutely stunning-just gorgeous! All my favorite qualities…Grecian style Neptune pool (from which the trident & columns below it are from actual remains from the roman empire!), Spanish style architecture & tiling, marble lined stairs, LOTS of trees-including fruit trees, and water features

….there were even antique statues outside-one of David from Italy, and one of 2 lioness’ with manes from KING TUT’S TOMB!!! No joke! Craziness!!!! But-then came the inside….NOT of interest to me AT ALL-well except for the excitement you could sense from the 30’s era (my FAVORITE time period)!
Still-it was soooooo ostentatious, overcrowded with artifacts and antiquities-it just screamed, “overdone with greed” or as we like to call it “Michael Jacksonish”. Mom and I both agreed that it was eerie and uncomfortable, and that we would never want to be a guest in such a place.

The dining hall was gothic in style (P.S.-NOTHING meshed in this home, Mr. Hearst was quite eclectic.)-Apparently the set designers from Harry Potter came to check it out as inspiration for the Hogwarts dining hall! Not hard to see the resemblance.
The walls of one of the living rooms was literally “wallpapered” with choir chair/pews from some cathedral, and the end chairs of the table were solid wood & velvet upholstered seats that the Pope had used at the Vatican too! Are you kidding me????
During part of the tour,  the guide took us down to see one of the indoor pools…yes I said ONE of….it was incredible. 10 feet deep, and tiled with 1x1 glass tile murals from floor to ceiling. Many tiles were encrusted with gold flakes! See what I mean???  Still it was quite impressive for a pool,  even the bottom of the pool had the same incredible tile work.-did I mention that the ladders in all these pools were made of solid marble and went all the way down to the bottom? Craziness! The best part was you could just feel the history in there, which was neat (no doubt there was a lot of celebrity hanky panky goin’ on in there if ya know what I mean??? Especially from Mr. Hearst who had a 30-year affair with Marion Davies)
This guy supposedly loved animals and had his own zoo on the property-ranging from Polar Bears, Zebras, Tigers & Monkeys-to goats & other species from Africa! Before his death he gave all the animals to the San Fransisco, San Diego & L.A Zoos. However 2 of the Zebras still roam free on the property...
So in a nutshell-we basically spent the day expanding our knowledge of a visionary, greedy, womanizing/adulterous billionaire all afternoon, and were probably the only 2 chicas NOT gawking at all the goods he left behind....pretty awesome huh? lol- It was a LOOOOOONG drive back to Thousand Oaks and we barely made it through our Claim Jumper dinner without falling asleep! Definitely a good day though.

Beverly Hills 90210-Day 2

Day 2-
After a night of literally no sleep-due to attack of the ants, etc. we headed down to the dirty stinky lobby where we were bombarded with a billion other people waiting for breakfast of a “donut”. Not our cup of tea, so we skipped that meal and walked right past them to our car-lol

At one of the malls in Westwood, Mom went nuts at the Disney Store getting stuff for the kids. ☺ We got our “kicks” driving down Route 66-we decided we needed to bring the kiddos back here during the evening sometime....the entire Santa Monica Blvd. is lit up with vintage neon signs (just like in the Pixar movie CARS) My kids would be thrilled! Drove along Rodeo Dr. looking for Tiffany’s so I could get my ring cleaned, but eventually gave up…too many other things we wanted to do.
We were on a mission to find the memorial/burial sites of some of my favorite celebs so we could pay tribute-Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Dean Martin and we can’t forget Michael Jackson. J It was actually quite a peaceful experience…not really what I expected.
Horseback Riding through Griffith Park was a definite highlight for mom. I haven’t seen her this thrilled in a long time! We had our own horses and took an hour-long ride for only $20! My horse was the most stubborn animal I’ve ever met-and as far as my body after the ride…..let’s just say that Western saddles are a pain in the GROIN! These bruises will take DAYS to heal. Lol-
Grabbed some dinner at my all time favorite So Cal dining spot-In & Out! (Again…sorry Mike L) and were SOOOOO ready for a comfy & CLEAN night @ the Hampton Inn & Suites in Thousand Oaks. It did NOT disappoint! J

Happy to be home in Cali...

Day 1 of our Thelma & Louise -Mother /Daughter Road Trip–
Got up early and headed out from Valley Center-cruisin down the 5 to Santa Monica. Since I planned the itinerary and only had mom with me, I knew she’d be as excited as me to stop at the Lakeshore Outlet near L.A!!! Man, I got sucked in…had to make a few decisions on things to put back (let’s not spend ALL the trip money at the first stop! Lol)
Then we stopped at the Santa Monica Pier-also known as the end of historical Route 66. What a happenin’ place. Never a dull moment in Los Angeles. Even saw Cat Woman, a Playboy Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Elmo and Iron Man on the boardwalk! Ha ha ha. The sand felt so good between under my feet and the fresh smell of the air off the ocean made me homesick-but so happy to be back.

The Greystone Mansion was a stunning place. Originally built by Mr. Doheny (an original contributing community member of the Beverly Hills neighborhood) as a gift for his son.  After his death, the house was given to the City of Beverly Hills and is now used as a public park/museum. Used in lots of movies too like Indecent Proposal!

The Grove-my all time favorite LA shopping spot-had dinner at The Cheesecake Factory (sorry poobee), cruised the Farmers Market, introduced my mom to the latest technology of the Apple ipad (hilarious), and stayed for a little bit of a movie in the park!

The accommodations @ SUPER 8 were “interesting”-it got ok reviews online, and we needed to save money for better parts of the trip, but….NEVER again! I’m a hotel snob-I am ok admitting it. Just can’t do the “Super 8” thing-no matter HOW much money it saves you in the middle of Hollywood! Let’s just say this about it: ants in the bed (THE BED!!!!) and the bathroom, a strange “creamy” looking stain on the blanket (which is AFTER we had already pulled the comforter off and onto the floor-I’m weird about hotel comforters….), and the nastiest looking carpet of your life! Mom and I laughed and laughed about the state of this place and the fact that we forgot our pillows at home on top of it (another thing I am weird about)-at least it was safe-but that’s ALL it was…. Ah the memories, we are still itching just thinking about the ants.

Lookin' UP

Feelin' sentimental since my better half has gone to a conference for a few days (thank goodness I'm not a military wife-I might not make it! They are some brave souls I tell ya....)
The movie UP! reminds me of Mike & I...we've got lots of dreams and aspirations we work towards as a team-I'm grateful for our past together and am so excited for our future. Love you forever Poobee.

FLIPpin' Out!

Yeppers! We're getting one of these in time for our trip to Disneyland this year! Seriously....I can't wait! This little puppy is about the size of my cell phone AND all I have to do is hook the USB right into my computer to get the recordings off! We've needed a decent camcorder for quite some time....our last "hand me down" one has never really served it's purpose because we can't get the videos off of it! lol
Much love to Shannon for looking out for me and fantastic "educator discounts"! Sometimes being a teacher DOES have it's perks I guess!

Summer Backyard Movies

We love warm summer nights-and watching movies in the backyard. A little popcorn and M&M's....what else could be better....

It's an Ellensburg Martone Summer tradition-hopefully one we can continue for years to come :)

Afternoon Tea

Shannon called this morning and asked if Emma would like to join her for a Bridal Shower Tea Party this afternoon....would she???? Are you kidding? This girl is an "Alice in Wonderland" freak-of COURSE she would! :)
She even got to wear the special dress grandma made her-it was perfect for the occasion. We did her hair fancy, which she was also OVER THE MOON about....
and here she is, all ready to go!
-bag spilling over with trinkets....CHECK!
-Playskool tea party set....CHECK!
-flop flops....CHECK!
I let Shannon borrow a camera with the promise to take lots of pictures for me-mission accomplished. Check out the fun they had!
"pinkies up"....well-kinda :)
Seems she had a great "girly" afternoon with one of her favorite people on the planet. Hugs to Shannon for the invite. :)
