Valley of Smoke

The Table Mountain fires (from the lightning we had 2 weeks ago) are still not contained. Which means we have been inhaling smoke for 2 weeks. EmmaLee started soccer before she started school. She has had a total of 2 practices and 1 game day-all others have been cancelled due to poor air quality. When I mean poor-I mean dangerous. This morning Emma woke up all excited because it was "going to snow" outside. Ummmm-nope. That isn't cold air out there honey-that is smoke. My friend Rachel took these this MORNING. This is the sky we have been looking at & air we have been breathing day in & day out for 2 weeks.
Scary huh?

Emma has yet to experience an outside recess at school. Mike & I have been popping Ibuprofen like it is water just to take the edge off the headaches this is causing. The house smells like a campfire & even the dogs are panting. Ugh. I know there are hundreds of firefighters working on this-one has even died. People are loosing their homes. I heard today that what we are breathing in here in Ellensburg for just one day is like living in heavy LA smog for a week! That is nuts. My throat is on fire & I haven't spent time outside in a week. The kids are still doing fine-but how long can that last? Can't take much more of this.

First "Day" for this KINDER KID!

Our school district has a unique way of starting Kindergarten. The first week of school is spent doing 1 on 1 conferences with each incoming Kinder Kiddo & their parents. Today was Emee's turn. She could hardly stand it. The anticipation for going to kindergarten is literally eating her alive! I finally reached a point today where I told her she needed to STOP asking if it was "the day" yet or "time to go" yet. :)
She got out her sign & new Back to School duds-both of which Grandma got for her-and we did a traditional photo in front of the school. I can't believe she is old enough for this. So bittersweet.

We checked in at the office & didn't have to direct this munchkin where to go-she's been waiting for this day since she was LITERALLY in diapers!
Her teacher met her outside the classroom & instructed her to organize her school supplies into community bins. She did so happily!
Then she was given a sheet of paper with a scavenger hunt game on it & directions to search the school for clues.....
She was off! We had to remind her a time or 2 to dial it back & quit running in the halls! She was SOOOOOO excited!

Outside the Gym we ran into her Principal-Mr. Moffet. He introduced himself and asked her if she was EmmaLee Martone (he knows Dadda :). She nodded her head. He asked "Is it E-M-M-A-L-E-E"! She was stunned. lol After a warm greeting and "we're so glad you're here this year", he was on his way and so was she. Back to the game!

Upon completion of the hunt-we all went in the classroom for our meeting. Em got a treat & could hardly sit still in her chair-she was SUPER excited to finally be experiencing this moment! ha ha ha

The classroom is so warm, cozy & homelike. Such a comfortable learning environment. I LOVE that it isn't so stringent feeling! I knew EXACTLY what I was signing up for (and willing to fight for)-Em & I have been coming to this room since she was in the womb-but after our conference, even Dadda (the typical laissez faire type guy) was EXTREMELY impressed at the program her teacher has in place too! We KNOW Em is going to have a FANTABULOUS year! Such a relief for us as parents.
While Emma explored, Mike & I filled out papers, signed up for snack days & my personal favorite: wrote a "Love Note" to EmmaLee for her teacher to read to her on her first day of school. An AWESOME touch to an already great program Shannon is running. Ellensburg is SO lucky to have her!
What other classroom has a "mini living room" as their reading nook??? Top Notch Kinder teacher people. TOP NOTCH! What else would I expect from my best friend??? ;) Oh-did I mention. Em's teacher is her Auntie Shannon! We are blessed.

Love a teacher that closely follows PINTEREST!

Emee found this Skippy Jon Jones at the store along with a "Skippy goes to School" type book & said "Shannon would LOVE this Mom!" So we stashed it away 2 months ago! :)
How cute is the hallway outside her classroom? SUPER inviting for little munchkins-and their parents, who are we kidding! ha ha

It is sooooooo-nice to be able to be on the PARENT end of the teaching gig this year.
Now I just have to keep this girl busy until next Wednesday when she has her first official regular school day with her classmates! Oy vei! Wish me luck.
